1.
I saw you last night in the soft moonlight
And it wasn’t a moment too soon
Your hair black as night and your cheeks fit to bite My darling, how do you do? Oh my, here is my thigh Oh yes,
this is the best I swim in your skin and we roll and we win And the morning begins to bloom
2.
I’ll grow a pearl This grain of sand got under my skin If I revolve, evolve and spin I’ll grow a pearl A string of pearls Each one a story under my skin Would not give up, did not give in A string of pearls Shimmering silken in their glow Little planet system tougher than bone I got through all this and I can show My string of pearls Turning swirls of all I’ve known
3.
Cannabin, Cannabin Take me in oh take me in We made it past the Zollverein So kiss my cheeks oh cherubin I've run away with Jacobin We have a plan and we will win But who will reign after the king The tyrant and the guillotine We were tired and we were thin We followed that young Franciscan His eyes were soft but oh the sins Profane Illumination grins Go ask Walter Benjamin This rose my heart, these streets my kin Ambrosia for my nuclein Oh Cannabin oh Cannabin Oh revolution now be won On dewdrops drying in the sun While we have foggy fire-lit fun All vessels brimming deep crimson And if the die-off comes again We've cinnamon and soft mullein We'll wear it in our beaks and then We'll smooth the edge with Cannabin
4.
Before the sky turns into walls Can we watch the dusk fall Purple light on the snow I know you made the call I know you made the call And I’m happy, I’m happy I know you made the call And I’m happy with it all I had a dream last night There were holes in the walls Filled with other peoples stuff Couldn’t keep track of it all I know you keep it out I know, I know I know you keep it out I know that you do The light’s an open palm And the branches keep us calm We don’t leave today But when we do we won’t be gone When we do we won’t be gone And I’m happy, I’m happy I don’t know what’s going on But I’ve been happy all along I’m a holy fool And a killer too And I leave it all with you
5.
6.
I'll sell off all my gadgets and trade them in for wine Empty empty everything We're running out of time I’ll throw my books into the fire To share its blessed heat I’ll give up all my carbs, just let me have a little meat I spun into a spiral with a tablet and its news Sensationalist crap intended to the heart confuse Eroded by a sickening tale That crushes to despair The sun still warms the flowers yet I cannot feel the air Come back! Oh go away Come back! It's best to stay This little life we build I do not want to stray Come back! Oh go away (we’ll find a way!) Come back come back! The mugshot of the perpetrator branded on my brain A vision of his actions Ignitions of its pain Consumption is consuming me I have to turn it off and with it tiny house dreams and the meme inspiring trough Teetering with teacups Too many on the tray In morning mist a dinosaur has knocked them down to play Pick up the little pieces Add them to the wall Calm now start unveiling It's time to make the call Come BACK...! Everything at fingertips with every feed the brain trips A day is such a loaded thing but chasing it would only bring Another and another day of churning minds that leak and spray Oh where am I? So far away Come back! Come back!

There is a light in the forest There is a face in the tree I'll pull you out of the chorus And the first one's always free You can never go a-hunting With just a flintlock and a hound You won't go home with a bunting If you blow a hundred rounds It takes much more than wild courage Or you'll hit the tattered clouds You must have just the right bullets And the first one's always free You must be careful in the forest Broken glass and rusty nails If you're to bring back something for us I have bullets for sale Why be a fool when you can chase away Your blind and your gloom I have blessed each one of these bullets And they shine just like a spoon To have sixty silver wishes Is a small price to pay They'll be your private little fishes And they'll never swim away I just want you to be happy That's my only little wish I'll fix your wagon and your musket And the spoon will have its dish And I shudder at the thought of your Poor empty hunter's pouch So I'll keep the wind from your barrel And bless the roof of your house

When I was seventeen I tried to save the world But how do you save the world? In its melting, fiery roar I found that I’d stopped playing my guitar Was too busy for all that The waiting world could wait no more A vastness came to view, I was tiny I was few With my bigger picture actually quite small If I could talk to me then now I’d say relax and take some time Don’t give up too much to give your all. Halfway through and now I know I’ll never Fall upon that moment I imagined where I’d Settled and resolved All anxieties be solved Halfway through I know I may never know When I was twenty and my mind began to spin A messianic din Constellations of all stars Theologies to haul through twisted darkness And the beauty that befalls On the starry ship to mars I thought that they were prophets Who would take me round the world with my bigger picture actually quite small If I could talk to me then now I’d say relax and take some time Don’t give up too much to give your all. Halfway through and now I know I’ll never Fall upon that moment I imagined where I’d Settled and resolved All anxieties be solved Halfway through I know I may never know In my thirties when I toured so many towns Ilfracomb to Parry Sound Truth more humble than the dream I had times that were so glamorous and fun But I lost a lot of friends Broke my body for the team Now I’m at the stage where a disillusion stays Loves leaders leave this life before their time I am talking to myself Sunlight and love are greatest wealth Slow down and be simplicity sublime Halfway through and now I know I’ll never Fall upon that moment I imagined where I’d Settled and resolved All anxieties be solved Halfway through I know I may never know

In the tarot The fool is good He takes a risk (Makes a wish - 2nd time) Jumps off a cliff And if you insult him He doesn’t get mad Just takes it and leaves it And then he is glad He never thinks twice No need to ask why Delicious spice He’s learning to fly Oh but oh, if only I knew That that fool was me I certainly feel like a fool But at least I am free
11.
That smile is for me I’m gonna put it in my pocket, (put it in my pocket) keep it for when I need Nothings gonna stop it, (Nothings gonna stop it) Firefly, you’re my firefly Firey little willow Whispering free Tiny rising pod of electricity You just love You just love That’s what I love about you You just love Come and walk with me Far away from trouble (far away from trouble) In the core of our hearts we are free We’ve got our little bubble (got our little bubble) Firefly, you’re my firefly (Silent diamond floating, gorgeous omen setting, Firefly sparkling so free, swimming in air effortlessly, Firefly) Molecule if life and luminosity Flooding all my cells In darkness I can see You just love You just love That’s what I love about you You just love The world is spinning and I know what’s going on Keep sparking up the shadows as you go along You just love You just love That’s what I love about you You just love
12.
My baby baby baby Stares into the light I don't know what she sees there It must be quite the sight Maybe it's a memory of another time in flight My baby baby baby Stares into the light My baby baby baby Sleeps upon my chest Her feet are at my waist And her head is at my neck My heart is all exploding In this sweet moment of rest It's the best The best My baby baby baby Dreams into the night Her face is ever-changing Her little smiles are bright Her eyes are little butterflies Dancing in their flight My baby baby baby Dreams into the night

about

Annabelle Chvostek's sixth album 'String of Pearls' brings together her Canadian singer-songwriter tradition and the nostalgia of her East European heritage with a long-standing connection to Uruguay. The songs were arranged and co-produced in Montevideo by long-time collaborator, Fernando Rosa, who gathered some of Uruguay's stellar classical, tango, and jazz musicians to add to a contemporary sound that harkens back to the grittiness of 1930s tango, vaudeville cabaret and swinging hot jazz. On the Canadian side, long-standing bandmate Tony Spina is back on drums alongside members of Toronto's vibrant Jazz Manouche community. Toronto producer David Travers-Smith works his magic in bringing together the Canadian and Uruguayan tracking to attain a uniquely diverse cross-cultural, cross-temporal sonic montage.

ON DEAFNESS AND THE MONO MIXES:

I’m releasing this album in two formats: mono and stereo. Since the last record, I became completely deaf in my left ear. All I can hear from the left side is the tinnitus triggered by a feedback blast during a soundcheck in England back in 2008. I’m one of three co-producers on this album, two of whom are deaf in one ear.

When producing music with multiple tracks, sounds tend to mush together, taking away from the clarity of the parts and the experience of the whole. The field and spacial clarity of the stereo mix is inaccessible to so many of us who struggle to hear. I know this is a common problem within hearing loss, so I decided to make an intentional mono mix for String Of Pearls.

Co producer David Travers-Smith rose to the challenge of creating a gorgeous monaural experience using leading-edge technology in combination with an encyclopedic knowledge of historical monaural recording techniques. He was able to analyze frequency buildup that occurs in a monaural context and meticulously peel away the excess while maintaining the colour and complexity of each individual sound. The result is that is each instrument, each part, and each moment still has its space around it – a sonic quality that I remember from when I could hear in stereo. Every part is clean, crisp, warm and dynamic all at once, making the whole multi-dimensional complexity accessible to my limited input. It’s revelatory from my late-deaf perspective. I am so grateful."
